Very few dogs can compare to the size and build of the Caucasian Ovcharka. Although the breedтАЩs appearance can very according to region, every aspect of its body, including its frame, bone structure, and muscular composition is generally strong and well developed. The torso is large with angled hindlegs and sturdy hocks. The head is massive with ears that are typically cropped to a small size. It is known to look similar to a bear in the face. A dark mask is common. The nose is very large and the eyes are almond shapred. Its coat is moderate in length and is typically a light shade of gray with white markings throughout. The tail is very thick and hangs down alongside the hock when the dog is at rest. When the dog is in motion the tail curls upward and over its side.
The Caucasian Ovcharka is a large breed that is capable of being both dominant and gentle. It typically exhibits its dominance when encountering unwelcome guests or other dogs not living within its same household. It can change its demeanor in a matter of seconds. With children it is gentle and meek. Of course, as with any breed, supervision is important when the dog is interacting with young children. The breed affords devotion to all family members, but tends to have closer ties with its owner. In adulthood it can become dominant to the point of disobeying its owner, especially if it senses its owner is weak. Training the Caucasian Ovcharka at an early age can help to socialize the breed and make it more obedient. It is territorial and will protect its family, whether the danger is imminent or imagined.

Ideal Living Conditions
The size and energy level of the Caucasian Ovtcharka makes the breed unsuitable for indoor living. Being free to romp in a large open area is the ideal living situation for the breed. With its thick coat, colder climates are ideal.
The Caucasian Ovcharka requires both physical and mental exercise on a daily basis. Its physical requirement is achieved with 30 minutes of running or other vigorous activity. Training the breed provides adequate exercsie for its brain.

The coat of the Caucasian Ovcharka sheds all through the year, with a heavy shedding occuring twice a year. Brushing the coat frequently will keep shedding to a minimum. General grooming of the nails, ears, and eyes is recommended.
Shades of buff, gray, brown, and tan are typical for the Caucasian Ovcharka. Black or white markings may exist on the face.
