Australian Kelpie

Description

A herding dog has to have a unique quickness that enables it to keep up with the herd. The Australian Kelpie meets the challenge. It is not only fast, but agile and light on its feet. Its speed and agility is due in part to its strong hindquarters. The muzzle is long and the mask is usually multi-colored. All types have a broad chest. The coat is layered, the undercoat being more durable to protect the dog from the elements.

Temperament

The Australian Kelpie is a guard dog and instinctively exhibits protective behavior. It will even herd children or pets if kept in a domestic environment. This behavior has a significant benefit in that the Australian Kelpie makes a great guard dog. It will loyally protect its family property, usually not to the point of attacking. It is very intelligent and highly trainable. It is fine with children, but supervision is recommended since the high energy Australian Kelpie may play too rough. It has a natural drive for working. If it becomes bored or inactive for longer periods of time it can become destructive.
