| Description |
| The Pekingese is a small breed with a distinct appearance. Its coat is long and rough to the touch. The fur is most profuse at the collars and shoulders. The coat gives it a full look, but it doesn't obscure its physical structure. The breed has a head that is broad and rectangular in shape. The ears are small and lay close to the head. Its nose is wide and flat. The breed's neck is muscular, but somewhat vague. It has a proud chest that is wide and deep. In proportion with the rest of the body, its legs are short. The back legs are well angled. |

| Temperament |
| The Pekingese is a breed that is courageous yet delicate. It loves to give affection and it loves it in return. It may distrust people it does not know. The breed is fine with other pets in the household, but may become jealous if it thinks the other pet is getting more attention. This breed is good with children, but because it is delicate it is not recommended around very young children who may play too rough. It will bark when strangers arrive to the household, but its barking may become excessive. The breed is responsive to training, but has a tendency to be stubborn. |

| The Pekingese is about 6-9 inches tall and weighs an average of 14 pounds. |

| Health Problems |
| There are some health problems associated with the Pekingese. Most conditions that this breed suffers from are due to its size. As a small breed it is susceptible to joint and knee problems. Some types also develop a herniated disk and trichaiasis. |

| Ideal Living Conditions |
| The Pekingese is great for an apartment or any other indoor living conditions. It is small and will not disrupt too much activity in the household. If the breed is kept indoors it will require daily opportunities for exercise because it tends to be inactive indoors. |

| Exercise |
| Daily exercise is good for the Pekingese, but it does not require a significant amount of exercise. Most types stay indoors and tend to be inactive. Short walks or other forms of physical activity that are not too exhausting are best for this breed since it can easily have difficult breathing. |

| The Pekingese has an average life expectancy of 10-15 years. |

| Grooming |
| The Pekingese has a beautiful coat that requires regular maintenance. At the very minimum the coat should be brushed on a daily basis to prevent matting. It sheds an average amount of its coat during the shedding season. More brushing is required during this time. Washing the coat on a regular basis is also recommended. Dry shampoo should be used when bathing this breed to prevent skin irritation. |
