| A shaggy coat with an extended amount of fur under its chin is how the Bearded Collie is usually characterized. The unique appearance of the breed is attributed to its breeding for both herding and show competition. Characteristics of physical prowess, which are typically associated with herding dogs are not apparent in the Beardie. Its body is longer than it is tall and medium in size. It has strong legs that are straight and completely covered with fur. The lengthy coat makes the facial features ambiguous, except for the large eyes that tend to be animated. Most of the time the ears lie loosely against the sides of the large head. |

| The Bearded Collie is an easy-going breed that is a fun household pet. It will play games and entertain young children with its sometimes goofy antics. However, supervision is recommended when they are with younger children since its energetic tendency may cause them to accidentally cause harm. It loves attention and loves being in the company of family members. Early training is necessary to teach the stubborn Beardie, as it is often called, proper behavior. Some types may exhibit herding ways, including nipping the heels of people or other household pets. |

| The coat of the Bearded Collie is different in puppyhood and adulthood. At birth the coat is fawn, blue, brown, or black. White markings may or may not exist. As it reaches adulthood the coat color, with the exception of white, becomes lighter. |
